How a Rug Sits in the Room

The right size is really about furniture, not floor area — these three layouts cover most rooms.

Living Room

Rest the front legs of your sofa and chairs on the rug, with the coffee table fully on it. The back legs can sit off the rug — this is the most forgiving, most common layout.

Bedroom

Centre the rug under the bed so it extends 18–24" beyond both sides and the foot. Nightstands can sit at the edge or just off the rug.

Dining Room

Size the rug so every chair stays on it even pulled back from the table — usually 24–30" beyond the table's edge on each side.

How to Measure for Your Space

Living Room

12–18" Front legs of every seat rest on the rug

As a general rule, aim for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to sit on the rug — it visually anchors the seating area instead of looking like an island. Leave 12–18" of bare floor between the rug's edge and the wall.

Dining Room

24–30" Chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out

The rug should extend at least 24–30" beyond the edge of the table on all sides, so chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out.

Bedroom

18–24" Rug extends past the sides and foot of the bed

For a queen or king bed, a rug should extend at least 18–24" beyond the sides and foot of the bed, so your feet land on rug, not floor, when you get up.

Entryway

Clear of the door's full swing and foot traffic

A smaller rug (or runner, for a hallway) works well here — leave enough clearance for doors to swing freely and for foot traffic to pass comfortably.
