Choosing the right rug size makes more difference to a room than almost any other decision. Here's how to think about it, room by room.
| Size | Best For |
|---|---|
| 4' x 6' | Entryways, small accent spaces, under a single armchair grouping |
| 5' x 7' / 5' x 8' | Small living rooms, bedrooms with a queen bed, home offices |
| 6' x 9' | Mid-size living rooms, dining areas for a 4-seat table |
| 8' x 10' | Standard living rooms, king-size bedrooms, dining areas for a 6-seat table |
| 9' x 12' | Large living rooms and open-plan spaces, generous dining areas |
| Custom | Anything outside standard sizing — available on every design |
As a general rule, aim for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to sit on the rug — it visually anchors the seating area instead of looking like an island. Leave 12–18" of bare floor between the rug's edge and the wall.
The rug should extend at least 24–30" beyond the edge of the table on all sides, so chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out.
For a queen or king bed, a rug should extend at least 18–24" beyond the sides and foot of the bed, so your feet land on rug, not floor, when you get up.
A smaller rug (or runner, for a hallway) works well here — leave enough clearance for doors to swing freely and for foot traffic to pass comfortably.
