How It's Made

From Fibre to Floor

Real photography from our artisan partners in Bhadohi — here's the process, step by step.

Hand-selected wool yarns and natural dye pots used for House of Souravi rugs
01

The Yarn

Undyed New Zealand wool arrives and is hand-selected for each design, then dyed in small batches to match the exact palette.

02

The Design

Every pattern is worked out in detail before production begins — colour placement, pile height changes, and where techniques like carving or looping will be used.

03

The Loom

The design is outlined onto the backing fabric, stretched taut on a frame, ready for tufting to begin.

04

The Tufting

Artisans work the design tuft by tuft with a hand-tufting gun, building up pile height and texture entirely by eye.

05

Carving

On designs that call for it, sections of the pile are hand-carved to create raised, sculptural texture.

06

Washing

Each rug is washed by hand to clean the wool, set the pile, and bring out the true depth of colour.

Finishing

Edges are bound by hand and the anti-skid canvas backing is applied for stability underfoot.

Final Inspection

Every rug is checked by hand before it's considered ready — for pile consistency, colour accuracy and finishing quality.
